Residence permit renewal in Türkiye 2026: step by step
A Turkish residence permit (ikamet izni) is renewed by you, personally, through e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr, followed by an appointment or a posted file at the provincial Directorate of Migration Management. This guide walks through the 2026 process in order: timing, the online form, documents, insurance, address, fees and what happens while you wait.
1. When to start
The renewal window opens 60 days before the current permit expires and closes on the expiry date itself. An application made inside that window keeps you lawfully in Türkiye while the decision is pending, even if the card itself has expired. An application made after expiry is treated as a first application, with a visa-overstay risk attached. Put the date in your calendar now: expiry minus 60 days is the day to begin collecting documents, not the day to submit.
Documents such as the insurance policy and the address record take a few days to obtain, so a realistic plan is: days 1–10 collect, days 10–14 fill the form and pay, then the appointment or the posted file.
2. The e-ikamet form and the appointment
On e-ikamet you select "I am applying for an extension", enter your passport, address, income and insurance data, upload a biometric photo, and choose how the file is handed in. Depending on the province, the system either assigns an appointment (randevu) at the İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü or instructs you to post the printed file by PTT within five business days. İstanbul uses appointments for most permit types. Print the application form, sign every page and keep the application document (müracaat belgesi): with it and the fee receipt you may leave and re-enter Türkiye for up to 15 days while the decision is pending.
The legal processing period is up to 90 days. The card is posted to the address you registered, so a wrong address in the system means a lost card.
3. Documents for a 2026 renewal
- Signed e-ikamet application form.
- Passport (valid at least 60 days beyond the requested permit period) and a copy of the identity and current visa/entry pages.
- Four biometric photographs, taken in the last six months, white background.
- Current residence permit card.
- Health insurance covering the whole requested period: a private policy that meets the Directorate's minimum coverage circular, or proof of SGK coverage. The policy dates must start no later than the application date.
- Proof of address: the e-Devlet residence record (yerleşim yeri belgesi) in your name; if you rent, a notarised lease in some districts; if you stay with a host, a notarised undertaking from them.
- Proof of means: bank statement, pension letter or employment document; the amount is judged against the current net minimum wage per person.
- Permit-specific items: student certificate, family register, title deed, work-permit exemption, as applicable.
- Receipts for the card fee and harç, in your own name.
Foreign civil documents (a new marriage certificate, a child's birth certificate) must be apostilled in the issuing country and translated by a sworn translator with notarial certification in Türkiye. See our guides on apostille and notarised translation cost.
4. What the state charges in 2026
Two amounts are paid to the state, by you, against a receipt in your name: the residence permit card fee and, for most nationalities, the residence harç calculated by duration. Some nationalities are exempt from harç by reciprocity (for example Turkmenistan and Syria); others pay a per-year amount set in the Harçlar Kanunu table. The payment reference comes from e-ikamet; you pay at the tax office or through a bank.
State fees and notarial tariffs are paid by you directly to the state or to the notary; they never pass through us and we receive nothing from any notary. The figures above are the official 2026 tariff, last checked 24.10.2026.

- Insurance that starts after the application date or ends before the requested period.
- Address not registered at the Nüfus Müdürlüğü, or registered at an address different from the one on the form.
- Photographs older than six months or not biometric.
- Passport validity too short for the requested duration: the permit is then shortened, not refused, but you renew again sooner.
- Missed appointment: the application is cancelled and the 60-day window may have passed.
Our renewal guidance exists for exactly these points: a document list for your permit type and nationality with the source for each item, insurance and photo pre-checks, step cards for every e-ikamet field, a printed appointment pack and a person with you at the Directorate. You fill the form, you sign, you pay the state.

Questions
Can I renew after my permit has expired?
An application after the expiry date is not a renewal: it is treated as a first application and the days after expiry count as overstay. If you are within the last days of validity, apply online today, even with an incomplete file; missing documents can usually be added, a missed deadline cannot.
Do I have to attend in person?
Yes. The applicant appears personally at the appointment with the originals, or the file is posted in the applicant's name where the province uses the PTT route. A family member or a company cannot attend in your place without a notarised power of attorney, and even then the Directorate may call you.
Can I travel while the renewal is pending?
With the application document (müracaat belgesi) and the harç and card-fee receipts you may leave and re-enter Türkiye for up to 15 days per trip without a visa, provided the previous permit had not expired at the time of application.
