Citizenship through marriage to a Turkish citizen: the conditions in article 16 and the file you bring to the interview
Marriage to a Turkish citizen does not confer citizenship; it gives the right to apply after three years. Article 16 of Law 5901 sets the conditions: at least three years of marriage that is still continuing, living together in family union, no activity incompatible with the marital union, and no obstacle in terms of national security or public order. The application is made in person at the İl Nüfus ve Vatandaşlık Müdürlüğü of the province where you live, followed by an interview before a commission and an investigation. We prepare the document file the NVİ list requires — civil records from your country with apostille and sworn translation, criminal-record certificates, proof of shared residence, photographs — in order, and a sworn interpreter sits with you at the interview.
Price — one applicant
State fees and the notarial tariff are paid by you directly to the state or to the notary. We are not a notary and receive no remuneration from any notary, bank or lawyer.

How it works
Conditions and document list
You tell us the marriage date, where you live, your nationality and where your civil documents were issued. You receive the list for your province with the chain for each foreign document and the order in which to obtain them.
Collection, apostille, translation
You obtain the foreign documents; we tell you which need apostille in which country and which can be issued by your consulate here. Our sworn translator translates; a notary certifies where the office requires it.
Residence proof and file
We assemble the shared-residence set from your records and index the whole file in the NVİ order. You receive the appointment pack with what to bring, in your language and Turkish.
Interview
One preparation session goes through your own file — dates, addresses, names, how you met — so your answers match your documents. At the interview a sworn interpreter translates faithfully. We do not script or coach answers; the commission assesses the marriage.
Typical cases
- Married three years last month, spouse Turkish, living in Üsküdar, documents from Ukraine: a standard file where the criminal-record certificate's validity window drives the timing.
- Marriage registered abroad and only later registered in Türkiye; the Turkish family register must show it before anything else.
- Spouses with different registered addresses for work reasons; family union must be shown with more than address records.
- Applicant with a previous marriage and a name change; the civil records must reconcile across passports, divorce decree and marriage certificate, each apostilled and translated.
- Child born of the marriage; the child is Turkish by descent and is registered separately — see child's citizenship.
What can go wrong
- Counting three years from the wedding abroad when the marriage was registered in Türkiye later. The office counts from the legally valid marriage; a lawyer confirms your dates.
- Criminal-record certificate expired by the appointment. Order it last; apostille and translation take days, not weeks.
- Translation by a translator not sworn at the certifying notary. The office rejects it. Our translator and partner notary match.
- Inconsistent answers at the interview. Dates and addresses that differ from the file raise questions. Preparation means knowing your own file.
- Anyone offering to "arrange" the interview or its result. There is no such service. Report it; read our standard.
Questions
Do I automatically become Turkish after three years of marriage?
No. Three years of continuing marriage in family union is the condition to apply under article 16; the Ministry decides after the interview and the investigation. We prepare the file; the decision is the state's.
What happens at the interview?
A commission at the provincial directorate asks both spouses about the marriage and family life. A sworn interpreter is permitted for a spouse who does not speak Turkish. We prepare you by going through your own documents so that dates, addresses and names are consistent; we do not supply answers.
Must my spouse attend?
The Turkish spouse is part of the process and is usually interviewed as well; the office tells you at the appointment stage. We include the spouse's documents in the file.
What does the state charge?
Application and identity-card fees as published by NVİ, paid by you at the authority's payment point. The foreign apostille fees are those of the issuing country. We never collect state fees; translation and notary costs are shown separately on your plan.
